Building my website. Why did I choose Wix??

I have had a website for a number of years, but never really taken it seriously. It started off as an offer from a website builder called Clikpic and whilst it was good value and easy to use, it ultimately became a bit of a burden for two main reasons. The workflow did not really match my needs, it is a bit clunky, image specifications are awkward and images are not protected from download. However, as a basic site builder with reasonable templates, Clikpic was an excellent starting point.

I decided to look at a provider that seems to sponsor a high proportion of the photographers that I follow on Youtube - Square Space. Using the free site plan, lasting approx 14 days, I managed to get a professional-looking site together quite quickly. Square Space has a lot of high-quality templates and features that let you get a site up without too much bother. It does this using visual components, mostly under the covers and hides the nitty-gritty from the user. I ultimately found this a bit frustrating, as I found all too often I wanted to tweak this or that and break free from the restrictions of the template or component. Perhaps, if I had invested more time I would have found what I was looking for, but frustration and my lack of patience got the better of me. Cost was also a factor, although the plans have a similar cost to Wix plans, I could only find 10% discount opportunities through the sponsored photographers.

So I turned to Wix. Very similar to Square Space, Wix has a wide variety of templates and visual components and allowed me to put together a 'free' website (lasting forever!) with ease. The big difference for me is the ability to upload photographs into a container for use and distribution across multiple pages and galleries and the way this supports my workflow. The easy access to the multiple settings of sections, galleries, visual components and, headers and footers satisfies my need to tinker. A big bonus is the easy to manage blogging component which seamlessly allows you to create and maintain blog posts. Cost-wise, at the time of purchase, Wix was offering a 50% discount on a 3-year plan

Both Square Space and Wix help you produce excellent professional looking websites, but I just felt that Wix just meets my needs a little bit better. I must stress this is my personal opinion and no website builder is perfect. If you are in the market for an easy to use website builder I would suggest giving both a test and making your own mind up.
